Slick roads blamed for several traffic mishaps
State police blame slick road conditions on a number of vehicle accidents in the area Sunday night that injured four people, including one who was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital. In Rostraver Township, police reported vehicle operator Robin Rohrer of Beallsville and her passenger Michael Shultz were injured when Rohrer’s 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier slid on the snow and ice, causing the vehicle to travel off Interstate 70 and roll over onto its roof near the Arnold City exit at 7:25 p.m.
Police said emergency medical personnel freed both occupants. Rohrer was flown to Mercy Hospital for treatment of a moderate injury, while Shultz was taken by ambulance to Highlands Hospital for treatment of a minor injury, police said.
Their vehicle was severely damaged and was towed from the scene, police noted.
In North Union Township, Zandra L. Jones, 24, of 1058 Bolden Road in Waltersburg was not injured when her vehicle slid on a snow-covered Star Lite Road and struck a tree along the north berm, state police said.
Also in North Union Township, Joseph Sante, 40, was not injured when his 2000 Nissan Frontier struck an embankment and flipped over after losing control on a snow-covered Route 119 at 8:15 p.m., state police said.
In North Belle Vernon, Kelly McCrory of Bentleyville suffered minor injuries when her 2002 Dodge Durango slid on the ice-covered Interstate 70 roadway and rolled over onto its roof at 7:10 p.m. Passengers in McCrory’s vehicle, Daniel Oshetsky of Bentleyville and Michael Oshetsky of Carmichaels, were not injured in the accident, said police.
Also on an ice-covered I-70 in North Belle Vernon, Diane Bouchat of Lynnwood suffered minor injuries when the 1998 Ford Explorer she was a passenger in slid on the roadway and came to rest on the driver’s side at 7:50 p.m. George Bouchat of Lynnwood, who operated the vehicle, was not injured, police said.
The Fayette County 911 center reported dispatching police and fire crews to about eight vehicle accidents from the start of snowfall on Sunday evening.
