Mary Ryan

Mary Brown Ryan, 85, passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004. Born in Fairchance, Pa., Dec. 25, 1918, she was the third of eight children of Roy L. and Lulu T. Brown.

She completed training as a nurse at Uniontown Hospital School of Nursing, Uniontown, Pa., and 1938. Following several years of practice as a registered nurse, she volunteered for service in the Army in March 1942, and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. During World War II, she served for more than two years in Assam, India, in the 14th Evacuation Hospital, and was chosen “Ideal Nurse” of the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations.

Following discharge from the Army, she lived with her husband, Carl D. Ryan, in Gainesville, where their first child was born. In 1950, they moved to Jacksonville, and when their children were grown, she worked as a Senior Staff Nurse in the Medical Department of Prudential Insurance Company until her retirement in 1982.

She has been a member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church since 1950, having served there as president of Episcopal Church Woman and Alter Guild Chairman.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Ryan DuBois of Saint Augustine; son, William R. Ryan of Jacksonville; two grandchildren, Matthew Carl DuBois and Christine Elizabeth DuBois; sister, Phyllis Brown Fike; two brothers, Carl L. Brown and Earl E. Brown; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be today at 10 a.m. at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. John E. Eason officiating. Arrangements were made by the COREY-KERLIN FUNERAL HOME, 940 Cesery Boulevard, Jacksonville, Fla., 32211.
