Anthony “Tony” Kopec, 80, of Masontown, Pa., died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, in the Uniontown Hospital after a brief illness. He was born June 23, 1924, in Edenborn, Pa., a son of the late Vincent and Amelia (Metro) Kopec.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the following brothers and sisters, Vincent, Jacob and Louis Kopec, Agnes Lubowicki and Sophia Bizik.

He was a member of All Saints Roman Catholic Church, Fort Mason American Legion Post 423, and the Italo-American Citizens Club of Masontown. Tony loved the outdoors and made many friends by taking his daily walks around Masontown.

During World War II, he served his country in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. In 1987, he began his retirement years after working for 42 years as an underground coal miner for both Consolidation Coal and United States Steel Corporation.

Tony will be sadly missed by his wife, Rose (Kowalczyk) Kopec, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage on July 3. Also surviving are his daughter, Karen Hughes and husband, Mark of Masontown; his son, John Kopec and wife, Laurie (Buck) Kopec of Alpharetta, Ga.; grandchildren, Amy and Corey Hughes and Kelsey and Ryan Kopec; a brother, Edward Kopec of McClellandtown, Pa.; a sister, Louise Manchas of Adah, Pa.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the HAKY FUNERAL HOME INC., A Dignity Memorial Provider, 515 North Main St., Masontown, on Wednesday from 2 to 9 p.m., and on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, until 9:30 a.m., when Prayers of Transfer will be said. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in All Saints R.C. Church, Masontown, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. James F. Bump as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by Faith-Gray-McArdle VFW Post 4584 and Fort Mason American Lodge 423. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tony’s memory to All Saints Roman Catholic Church, 101 South Washington St., Masontown, Pa.
