UPPER TYRONE TWP. – Township residents can expect to pay the same amount in taxes in 2005 that they paid in 2004. The supervisors Tuesday passed their 2005 tentative budget keeping taxes the same. The $248,000 spending plan shows that the township will receive revenue from taxes in the amount of $143,198, license and permits in the amount of $2,000, interest, rents and royalties in the amount of $19,365, intergovernmental revenue in the amount of $64,613 and miscellaneous revenues in the amount of $2,000.

Projected expenditures show that the township expects to spend $65,240 on general government, $19,100 on public safety, $161,700 on highways, roads and streets and $2,000 on miscellaneous expenses.

According to secretary Louise Koza, the township’s taxable income, estimated by the Fayette County Assessment office, is set at $61.5 million.

Koza said that the supervisors have a carryover of $830,269 in cash, checking, savings, certificates of deposits and money market funds.

In other matters, the supervisors announced that they have hired a code enforcement officer. Huibe Colman of Connellsville began his duties almost two weeks ago, according to supervisor chairman Sam Killinger.

Killinger and supervisors Jack Fullem and Chuck Cook said Colman will be working with county officials to make sure that Upper Tyrone Township residents are keeping up with their property and that they are not keeping “junk vehicles” on their property without proper license and registration.

“We received a letter from the county saying that the county commissioners are cracking down on these two areas,” said Killinger. “The letter asked that we submit the proposed zoning map with suggested changes to the office as soon as the review was completed.”

Killinger additionally said that the letter asked supervisors to send a list of properties that have junk vehicles and/or salvage operations to ensure that proper and legal enforcement is being complied with.
