J. Allan Brookes
J. Allan Brookes, born 1908, in Sheffield, England, formerly of Greene County, Pa., died Saturday Nov. 13, 2004, at a local hospital. Mr. Brookes was the son of the late James and Mary Elizabeth Brookes.
He worked as a superintendent of Warwick Mine, Greensboro, Pa. He was also the General Manager of Mather Colliers Mine, Mather, Pa. At retirement, he was head of coal operations for the Steel Company of Canada, Hamilton, Ontario.
Mr. Brookes was on the Board of Directors at Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg, Pa., as well as a Director of the Gallatin Bank offices in Jefferson and Uniontown. He served as President of Greene County Country Club as well as honorary Vice President of Lakewood Country Club, Morgantown, W.Va. Mr. Brookes was a 32nd Degree Mason, and he received his 50-year pin in 1994. He was also a member of the Syria Temple in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Survivors include his wife, Helen B. King-Brookes of Sumter, S.C.; one son, Richard L. Brookes and his wife, Jean of Sumter, S.C.; five grandchildren, Samantha Brookes and Richard L. Brookes Jr., both of Carlisle, Pa., James A. Brookes II of Green Castle, Pa., Brian Cheney of Harrisburg, Pa., and Melody Lynn of Bowie, Md.; a niece, Mary Hillis Perrier-Anderson of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Charles and Joan Gibbs and daughters of Sumter, S.C.; and five great-grandchildren.
