Area musicians stage benefit
In a show of compassion and caring, area musicians are coming together to demonstrate support for one of their own on Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Palms Yacht Club in Lower Speers. “A Message to Michael” will be presented as a benefit/fund-raiser from 1 to 6 p.m. in honor of Michael Hyer, formerly of Charleroi, who passed away on Sept. 1 at the age of 51 after a strenuous bout with leukemia. Hyer was a musician, songwriter and producer with many musicians from the area, a music teacher and a Vietnam veteran.
All proceeds from the event will go to Hyer’s mother, Cleo Hyer, 72, of Charleroi, to assist with her expenses and unmet debts.
A spokesman for Lumpy Gravy, host band for the day, said, “We are simply knocked out by the response after we put the word out calling for entertainers. Even those that have other commitments called to give regrets and said they would do whatever they could to promote the effort wherever they played. Some even cancelled paying gigs to make it.”
Scheduled to perform that day are Lumpy Gravy, Brother Jeep Rhythm and Blues Revue, ZEN, the Electric Folk and Blues Band, Fred Adams, Stric9, Dave Olson, Jeff Reese, Kevin & Kami and Fynal Tyme 2. “It’s a good day for all musicians in our area to come together, share in the experience, support a good cause and celebrate Mike’s love of music – a real show of unity,” the Lumpy Gravy spokesman said.
The event is open to the public. Admission is $5 for the day with all proceeds going to Mrs. Hyer.
The Palms will be offering food and drink specials and Steeler Football throughout the facility on its multiple screens, beginning at 4 p.m.
A special compilation CD of various artists will also be offered for sale to raise additional funds.
