Number of churches offering Thanksgiving services
Ever since Plymouth Gov. William Bradford declared a feast in 1621 to give thanks to God for their first harvest, Thanksgiving has been part of the American tradition. This year, a number of local churches and ministerial associations will offer community worship services and dinners as they also give thanks for their blessings.
Here is a list of local events that have been made known to the Herald-Standard:
Berean Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Searight and Butler streets, Uniontown, will feed the hungry, homeless, unemployed, lonely, low income and senior citizens on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Food baskets and clothing will also be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Brownsville Area Ministerium Community Service will take place on Thanksgiving Eve service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Calvin Presbyterian Church, located at 307 Spring Street. The Rev. Keith Conover of Pleasant View Presbyterian Church of Smock will preach. The Rev. Aleda Menchyk is host pastor. The service will include music provided by the PVPC Band and the Calvin/Pleasant View Combined Choir. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow. The offering is designated for the work and ministry of the Brownsville Soup Kitchen. Clean usable clothing and non-perishable food items are also accepted for the soup kitchen.
Calvary Chapel of Fredericktown will deliver dinners on Thanksgiving Day to approximately 80 families in Carmichaels, Clarksville, Fredericktown and Millsboro areas. To place someone on the list or for more information, phone Riki Dow at 724-592-5119.
City Church of Connellsville is hosting a Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving Day at the Senior Citizens Building from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Transportation is available by calling 724-628-8835 no later than Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Connellsville service unit of the Salvation Army, located at 201 E. Fairview Ave., is offering its Thanksgiving dinner today from 10 a.m. to noon.
Faith Assembly of God, 690 Morgantown Road, Uniontown, will sponsor Feed the Need on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Family Life Center. Certificates for free groceries for a Thanksgiving dinner will be given to the first 300 families. There will also be free food, haircuts and coats on site as well as help with energy assistance and food stamps. Teen Challenge International from central Pennsylvania will be there to share music and drama during the ministry portion. Transportation is available. For more information, phone 724-437-8101.
First Presbyterian Church, 114 Church St., Fairchance, will be the site for the ministerium’s Thanksgiving Eve service on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
First Presbyterian Church of Masontown and Masontown United Methodist Church are co-hosting a community Thanksgiving Eve service on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Presbyterian church, located at 104 W. Church Ave. Other churches in the Klondike Clergy are also participating. The free will offering will benefit the Salvation Army of Masontown Food Cupboard, the Presbyterian Food Cupboard and the Klondike Clergy. There will also be a canned food drive sponsored by area Girl Scouts to benefit the local food cupboards. For more information, phone the Rev. Good Neighbor Lunch at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, 232 E. High St., Waynesburg will offer Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving Day from noon to 1 p.m.
Roscoe will hold its annual community Thanksgiving service on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Roscoe United Methodist Church. A combined community choir will sing. Refreshments will be served during a fellowship hour following the service.
St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, located on Route 40 in Farmington, will celebrate Thanksgiving with a Mass that’s open to the community at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. In the weeks prior to the celebration, a drive has been conducted to college food for the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Uniontown.
Uniontown Corps of the Salvation Army, located at 32 W. Fayette St., will offer its Thanksgiving dinner on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tri-Town Ministerium will sponsor a community Thanksgiving service on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Cochran Memorial United Methodist Church, located on the corner of Griscom and Howell streets in Dawson. A community choir will be featured under the direction of Patty Lint and the Rev. John Jennings of East Liberty Presbyterian Church will bring the message. Communion by intinction will be celebrated.
Uniontown Area Clergy Association will have a Thanksgiving community worship service on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, located at 79 W. Fayette St. The Rev. Michael Orsted, pastor of Trinity, will be speaker. Trinity Bells handbell choir will provide special music. Light refreshments will be served in the chapel after the service.
