Fire destroys Dickerson Run mobile home
DICKERSON RUN – John and Patty Butler and their children were lucky they weren’t home early Thursday morning when fire ripped through their mobile home on Center Street. DL&V Fire Chief Jack Washabaugh said the fire that started in the furnace tore through the home in seconds. He also said that firefighters had trouble getting water because of a malfunctioning fire hydrant.
“The house was totally engulfed in flames when we arrived at about 2:40 a.m.,” said Washabaugh. “Since we had trouble getting water from the fire hydrant on the corner, we had to use our pumper truck and water from other fire companies.”
Washabaugh said a state police fire marshal was at the scene Friday and determined that the fire was accidental in nature.
The Butlers, according to Washabaugh, were visiting relatives in the mountains for Thanksgiving at the time of the fire.
Quinton Ohler of Connellsville, owner of the mobile home, said he was glad that the Butlers were not home when the fire broke out.
“I didn’t get to talk to the fire marshal yet, but I guess he told John (Butler) that the furnace blew up,” said Ohler.
“John said the fire marshal told him that the home went up in about seven seconds, so I am real, real, glad that they were not home at the time of the fire.”
Washabaugh said personnel from several area fire departments responded, including Dawson, Morrell, Connellsville Township and Flatwoods. Perry Township was on standby. Fayette EMS was also at the scene.
Washabaugh said no firefighters were injured.
