Monongahela Castner named pharmacy director
Deborah S. (Debbie) Castner, R.Ph. has been appointed director of pharmacy at Monongahela Valley Hospital.
Castner is in charge of all operations of the hospital’s pharmacy.
“Debbie has been an asset to our hospital and health system and, more important, our patients, throughout her career here,” Thomas J. Cullen, R.Ph., senior vice president at MVH, said.
“Because of her clinical and supervisory experience and expertise in the Pharmacy, we are confident she will continue to enhance the operations of the pharmacy and patient care in her new position.”
Prior to her recent promotion, Castner worked more than 24 years as a staff pharmacist at Monongahela Valley Hospital.
Cullen noted that Castner guided the pharmacy department over several years of significant transition when the department originally implementing one of its first computer systems.
He said she wrote the actual training and procedure manuals related to the entering of patient information geared toward medication safety.
“That transition increased the efficiency of the Pharmacy and, more importantly, the manner in which our patients receive their medications,” Cullen added.
Castner also has participated in various health education programs and wellness screenings presented at the hospital and in the community.
She also has presented pharmacology lectures for the Nursing staff at Monongahela Valley Hospital and has been a pharmacology instructor at Community College of Allegheny County.
Castner, a graduate of Mon Valley Catholic High School, received her bachelor of science degree in pharmacy in 1976 from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy.
Prior to joining the staff at Monongahela Valley Hospital in July 1980, she worked as a pharmacist at Tenth Street Pharmacy in Charleroi, Cost’s Pharmacy in New Eagle and Drugland Pharmacy in Rostraver Township.
In 1997, Castner was honored with the Edward J. Protin Memorial Award, one of Monongahela Valley Hospital’s most prestigious honors.
Castner is the daughter of Ruthella Borodaty of Monongahela and the late Alex Borodaty. She and her husband of 27 years, Raymond, a CareerLink program supervisor with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor, are the parents of a daughter, Lyndsey, 21, a junior at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. The family resides in Carroll Township.

PIC announces new supervisors
The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. (PIC) has announced the following personnel appointments to supervisory positions within its organization:
Effective Nov. 15, Patricia Jones has been appointed youth supervisor and Ted Martin and Diane Sproull have been appointed project supervisors for the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) program in Fayette and Westmoreland counties respectively.
“Each of them brings specific qualities that should prove beneficial to their respective programs. Their appointments will enable PIC to continue to provide the best possible services to the residents of Westmoreland and Fayette Counties,” Tim Yurcisin, PIC president, said.
The SPOC program addresses the needs of welfare clients with barriers to employment. The program focuses on collaboration of Workforce Investment Area, County Assistance Offices and CareerLink Centers, intensified case management, and specifically developed remediation, education/training, work activities and supportive services targeted to welfare clients with serious employment barriers.
The SPOC program prepares clients for entry into the workforce through education/training, work experience, community service, and subsidized employment opportunities.
PIC’s Youth programs include ComputerBuild, PROMISES, In-School and Out-of-School programs, and Career Exploration.
The goals these programs are to assist high school students in academic enrichment and remediation, to provide students the opportunity to explore careers suited to their interests, to encourage students to investigate and enroll in a post-secondary institution, and to empower the students with hands-on job skills.
PIC, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has been operating employment, education, and training programs in Westmoreland and Fayette Counties since 1983.
