Greene to seek grants

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

WAYNESBURG – The Greene County commissioners will vote today to submit two grant applications to the state for federal subsidy to help implement new voting procedures and technologies. In 2002, Congress passed the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) to help improve and modernize the nations election system.

According to Greene County Director of Election and Registration Frances Pratt, while the county was already ahead of the federal government with most of its voting practices, the federal funds can help continue to make voting across the county as easy and efficient as possible.

The funding, totaling more than $200,000 will be used to improve accessibility, upgrade voting devices and provide extended training for the county employees and volunteers working the polls.

Pratt said the county has 44 polling stations across the region.

The commissioners also conducted the following business:

– Will appoint someone to fill the vacancy on the Greene County Industrial Authority today.

– Announced that Allegheny Energy Supply Company, LLC has applied for a permit to dredge the Monongahela River as needed over the next 10 years to maintain the harbor area and reduce sediment buildup. The dredging would remove about 5,000 cubic yards of sediment, adding 12 feet of water to the company’s harbor area.

– Reminded area residents the annual Carmichaels Communities that Care picnic will be held at Wana B. Park Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
