Helen Urbany

Helen Berish Urbany, 99, of Carmichaels, Pa., died at 8:46 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at Beverly Healthcare, Waynesburg, Pa. She was born July 1, 1905, at Shoaf, Pa., a daughter of the late Stephen and Mary Ondas Berish.

Mrs. Urbany was a member of the St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church of Carmichaels, and was the first secretary of the Holy Rosary Society when services and meetings were held at the former Lund Theater in Carmichaels.

She was a member of the first class of students at the All Saints Parochial School built in the 1910 era. As a student, she was taught piano by the nuns at All Saints and was the church organist.

Mrs. Urbany was a great admirer of Father Francis J. Kolb and never forgot the greatness of Father Kolb as an innovator and force for good.

She was a member of the Cumberland American Legion Post 400 Auxiliary for 56 years, and a charter member of the Women’s Business and Professional Club in Carmichaels.

She and her husband, Frank J. Urbany formerly owned and operated the Carmichaels Furniture and Hardware Company, at Carmichaels. He died on June 29, 1963.

Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Peccon of Carmichaels; a son, Francis S. Urbany of McClean, Va.; five grandchildren, Gregory F. Peccon of Carmichaels, Francis S. Urbany II, of Pasadena, Md., Jeffrey Urbany of Memphis, Tenn., and Natasha and Maxmilian Urbany, both of McClean, Va.; five great-grandchildren, Michael Peccon of Carmichaels, Taylor, Zachary and Cooper Urbany, all of Memphis, Tenn., and Fletcher Urbany of Pasadena, Md.; a special daughter-in-law, Alejandra Urbany; special granddaughter, Joyce Peccon; a special friend, Marcie Hunyady; two nephews, James Berish of Michigan, and Robert Berish of Masontown, Pa.; a niece, Patricia Fulton of Falls Church, Va.; special aide, Lori Bialko and Evangelina, Nanny to her twin grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews from the Berish and Urbany families. She was the last of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by four brothers, John, Martin, Michael and Paul Berish; two sisters, Mary Tomay and Anna Christie; a son-in-law, S. J. “Ted” Peccon; and a daughter-in-law, Patricia Charles Urbany..
