Cleanup announced Dunbar Borough cleanup is planned for Monday. The cost is $5. Participants need to get on the list and get a receipt at the borough office. No tires, appliances or other hard-to-recycle items will be accepted. Hard-to-recycle items will be taken in spring of 2005. Any questions, call 724-277-4949.
Pin shoot canceled
South Connellsville Rod & Gun Club, pistol committee is announcing the cancellation of the Sept. 11 & 12 bowling pin shoot.
Funding offered
State Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-Washington/Fayette, wants area FFA, 4-H Clubs and other youth agriculture organizations to be aware that they can apply for state funding through the Agricultural and Rural Youth Grants program between now and Oct. 8.
Created in 1991 under Gov. Bob Casey, the program solicits proposals that benefit thousands of young people in programs having to do with agricultural issues and rural leadership development. In addition to FFA and 4-H, other eligible organizations include Ag in the Classroom, Future Homemakers of America and vocational education programs.
Direct grants are a maximum of $2,500 per year, and matching grants may be up to $10,000 per project. Direct grants may be used for seminars or field trips related to agriculture or rural issues, agriculture safety training programs and other forms of direct support for educational activities. Matching grants are awarded for capital projects or equipment purchases related to agriculture or rural issues. Examples of matching grant uses include greenhouses and livestock facilities.
Applications must be postmarked by Oct. 8.

Memorial service set
An outdoor candle lighting memorial service will be held on Saturday from 6 – 8 p.m. at the 911 Memorial located at Sylvan Heights Cemetery. There will be a procession of local fire departments, police, EMS, and Rolling Thunder lining up at the Laurel Mall parking lot at 5:15 p.m. The procession will leave the mall at 5:30 p.m. and proceed to the candle light service at Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home at Sylvan Heights Cemetery by 6 p.m.
Also participating will be the VFW Post 47 Band, local dignitaries, Uniontown Mayor James Sileo, Fayette County Commissioner Angela Zimmerlink, Salvation Army, local veterans groups, American Red Cross, and employees of Haky Funeral Home Inc., Sylvan Heights Cemetery and Lafayette Memorial Park. The community is invited to attend.
Office closed
Due to extensive water damage caused by the heavy rain, the Uniontown Social Security Office will be closed the remainder of the week and until further notice. All callers are asked to phone the Social Security Administration’s toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213. If anyone had an appointment to file a claim for benefits, they will be contacted at their home telephone number by a Social Security representative. In many cases, an individual will be able to file their application for benefits online at www.socialsecurity.gov
