Wharton supervisors approve traffic light for golf tournament

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

WHARTON TWP. – The township supervisors approved the installation of a temporary traffic signal at the intersection Route 40 and Route 381 during the upcoming PGA golf tournament at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and Spa. The supervisors received a written request from the state police to approve the installation of the traffic light, which will be subsidized by the resort and the PGA and operated by a state trooper posted at the intersection during the 84 Lumber Classic Sept. 23 through 26.

While traffic last year was light compared to pre-tournament estimates due in part to poor weather, the police recommended the signal to alleviate backup caused along Route 381, the main artery in and out of Ohiopyle.

The signal was approved stipulating payment by either the resort or the PGA for the light.

In other matters, the supervisors approved the installation of a dry hydrant at Lake Lenore located at the Lodge at Chalk Hill.

Supervisor Jack Lewis said the hydrant would be paid for through grants provided by the conservation district and that the new water source would reduce taxes for residents in the hydrant’s area by as much as 10 percent.

“The fire chief liked the idea, the owner of the lodge liked the idea and I like the idea,” Lewis said. “Farmington already pumps a lot of water from there. This would just make it easier.”

Lewis said the hydrant will also ease the burden on the Farmington Volunteer Fire Department who often lose time in the winter trying to break the ice on the lake to pull water for area fires.

Lewis added that the conservation district will apply for the necessary permits for the hydrant.

The supervisors also conducted the following business:

– Instructed Solicitor Denise Simon to send a letter to Verizon after complaints from area residents regarding trees down on power lines in the township and the company’s lack of response to requests for assistance during storms.

– Referred any zoning permit requests and questions to the county after the township opted in ot the Uniform Construction Code earlier this year.
