Third United Way telethon to air
With a new, engaging format, the third annual United Way telethon airs on Sunday, Sept. 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. on HSTV. “We’re excited to be holding the telethon again this year, and we hope everyone will tune in and pledge to the United Way,” said Lucinda Baron Robbins, 2004 campaign chairman.
This year, the United Way partnered with some local establishments to create a karaoke contest format the telethon. Viewers can call in with a $5 pledge and vote for their favorite singer. Local DJ Kingfish will emcee the event and is donating his time.
Residents and businesses are also encouraged to visit the studios and make an on-air pledge.
“We hope organizations and families that have been touched by the United Way and will visit us during the telethon and share in the excitement,” said Brandi Nicola, 2004 campaign events committee chairman.
When people stop by the studios on Beeson Avenue, balloons and footballs will be given out while listening to local band, the Squiffy Cats, who are also donating their services.
According to Robbins, the 2004 Campaign committee is confident they will reach their goal of $250,000. “We’ve already seen so much support from local businesses and individuals. I’m always impressed by the generosity of people here in Fayette County,” she said.
Participating karaoke spots include: Darby’s Pub, the Goal Post, Ryan’s Pub, the Brass Rail, and TD’s Clubhouse. Prizes for the karaoke winners have been donated by the Holiday Inn, the Inne at Watson’s Choice, the State Theatre Center for the Arts, Apple Annie’s, and Becker’s Shadyside.
“The United Way is changing, a new logo, new image, new direction. We encourage everyone to contribute to the 2004 campaign and show that ‘It Matters’ that the United Way is serving our community,” said Marlene K. Baker, United Way executive director.
