RECEPTION TO HONOR MARY JOHNSON: A reception to honor Mary Johnson, owner and operator of Steps to Beauty Salon in Masontown, will be held Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the home of the Rev. Bob and Barb Lewis, 137 Lytle Lane, to thank her for her goodwill and commitment to the community. Special music will be provided. Long considered an historic site, the rustic old church is located two and a half miles east of Smithton, off Route 981, in the Barren Run area of the township. MOUNT OLIVE EVANGELICAL CHURCH, Route 982 near Connellsville, welcomes its new minister the Rev. Joseph McCarty, his wife, April, and their children, Elaina, 3, and Josiah, 1.
McCarty recently received his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. He has held a probationer’s license with the Eastern Conference of the E.C.N.A. Church since 1999. The McCartys ministered at the Quakertown E.C.N.A. Church from 1998-2004. McCarty plans to begin seminary work in the near future.

ST. GEORGE SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH IN CARMICHAELS announces representatives of the church will travel to Episcopal Headquarters of the Eastern American Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Mars, Pa., for the celebration of the Patronal Feast of the St. Nikodium Chapel. Scott Seethaler, a Capuchin-Franciscan, will conduct a parish mission Sept. 26-29 as part of the parish’s centennial events. Seethaler has traveled throughout the United States giving missions, retreats and renewal weekends. He preaches in both religious and secular settings. His topics include faith, values, stress, education and family issues. Several of his books and audio and videotapes have been published for national distribution. Seethaler will preach on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 26 at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. His services will run Sunday through Wednesday at 7 p.m. In addition, Seethaler wil speak following the weekday morning Masses during his visit.
