Agency outlines tutoring service
Communities In Schools of Southwest Pennsylvania Inc. has announced a new tutoring service, the CIS Tutoring Academy, which will be available to all students in Fayette County in mid-October. CIS is recognized by the state Department of Education as an approved provider of education services, including supplemental education services, Educational Assistance Program and the Education Support Services (Classroom Plus).
Since last school year, CIS has offered after-school tutoring to students eligible for supplemental education services and the Educational Assistance Program. CIS has made the commitment to expand its tutoring program to encompass instruction for grades K-12 in any subject area.
Both computerized and teacher-directed instruction will take place on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until noon at the CIS Success Academy at the Uniontown Mall beginning in mid-October.
Low-income students enrolled in an Improvement II, Title I school can choose CIS as their supplemental education service provider and their school district will pick up the cost of the tutoring. The Educational Assistance Program will be available to any child whose school did not make school-wide adequate yearly progress in reading or math. Students from those schools that qualify can receive tutoring from their school or from CIS.
A third choice for tutoring services is the Classroom Plus program, which is available to any student in grade K-9 who is below the state standard or scored below proficient on the PSSA test. The state allows up to a $500 reimbursement per school year per student for tutoring received from CIS.
