– The Christian Thrift Shop is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

– Cathi Thomas is starting a new chapter of the Red Hats Society in Vanderbilt. Anyone interested in joining should call 724-529-2279 and ask for Cathi.

– Quilts are needed for the annual Pioneer Days Quilt Show. Quilts can be handmade or machine made. For more information or an application, please call Joan at 724-736-8080 or Shirley at 724-736-8422. Applications can also be picked up at the Old State Bank Museum or Colonial Cleaners.

– The Perry Book Club meets the fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Community Library. On Monday, Sharon Arms Doucet’s “Back Before Dark” will be discussed; Oct. 25, “Confinement” by Carrie Brown; and Nov. 22, Joanne Harris’ “Five Quarters of the Orange.”

– Little Redstone Methodist annual bazaar, craft and flea market sale on Oct. 16.

– Annual roast beef dinner will be held at the Perryopolis Methodist Church on Oct. 23. Church members wishing to donate food or supplies should contact Doris Jean White.

– The Israfil Class flea market will be held Nov. 6. Anyone having items to donate should collect them and get ready for the sale.

– Pioneer Days Parade is on Saturday from 11 a.m. Groups, organizations or individuals that want to participate in this year’s parade should contact Rod Staggers at 724-736-0352

– The Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department will hold its monthly late night bingo on Oct. 9 at the social hall. Doors open at 10 p.m. Paper packages are $25 for all you can play.

Library closed

The Frazier Community Library will be closed on Saturday due to the Pioneer Day Festival.

St. Nicholas fund-raiser

St. Nicholas Byzantine Church will hold a spaghetti dinner in the church hall today from 3 to 6 p.m.; take-outs are from 2 to 3 p.m., bring your own container. The menu includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, Italian bread, dessert and beverage. Costs are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger.

Spaghetti dinner

The Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department will host a spaghetti dinner on Oct. 3 at the fire station. The costs of the dinner are $6 for adults and $3 for children. For more information, call 724-736-4020.

Pioneer concert

A concert to kick off Pioneer Days will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. at Sampey Park. Entertainment will be provided by Dad and Son from Dawson.

Rehearsal

Members of “The Spirit of America” choir are reminded that rehearsal will be held at Sampey Park on Thursday evening at 7.

Musical planned

The Perry Pioneer Patriotic Choir will present the musical “The Spirit of America,” created by Sue C. Smith and Russell Mauldin, on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Sampey Park.

Pat Filak, choir director of St. John Catholic Church, will direct the production.

The concert presents a salute to the armed forces and will include patriotic favorites such as “This is My Country,” “America,” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

The Rev. John Matsko, interim pastor and music director of the First Christian Church, will sing a solo leading the choir to the Neil Diamond song “Coming to America.”

Cross-country news

The Frazier cross-country team represented their community by participating in the Relay For Life held on Aug. 15 to promote awareness and research to find a cure for cancer.

Team members Erica Sendek, Kenny and Derek Miller, Erin Sizemore and Rebecca Leary ran 7 miles between Connellsville and Uniontown, finishing at Laurel Highlands High School to support this worthwhile event.

The cross-country team thanks the community of Perryopolis and the staff of the Sons of Italy for their support in making their recent spaghetti dinner a success. A community record was broken with more than 300 dinners being served.

Pioneer Days

Pioneer Days are rapidly coming upon us. On Saturday, it will kick off with the parade in Perryopolis at 11 a.m.

Throughout both Saturday and Sunday, entertainment will be available on Fisher Stage with numerous crafters and food vendors filling Sampey Park.

The Civil War Camp will provide a firearms demonstration on Saturday and two different battle re-enactments with pyrotechnics will be held over the weekend.

The Colonial Camp at Fort Trial and the Grist Mill complex will provide demonstrations and overviews of life in the mid 1700’s.

Representatives of the British provincials, French and Native Americans will be on hand to bring our area’s earliest history to life.

Saturday night, a Civil War-Era Ball will be held at Fisher Stage beginning at 7. This is free and open to all with 1860’s dress, highly encouraged, but not necessary. In case of rain, the location will be moved to the Sons of Italy.

A buckwheat pancake and sausage breakfast will be held at the main pavilion Sunday morning at 8 a.m.

A Civil War-era church service will begin at 11 a.m. at Fisher Stage. A small admission fee is charged for this event.

The shuttle bus from town to both the Gristmill Complex and Sampey Park is free both days. Watch for parking signs as you come in to town.

Concert

A gathering of bands will occur today at Fisher Stage in Sampey Park, Perryopolis. Gates open at 4 p.m. for Shaun Novak Band, Copper Drama, Shatter Star, General Public and Victory Year. A small admission will be charged for six hours of music.

Food will be available. Bring your own chair or blanket for festival seating. This is a non-alcohol event.
