Sister Mildred Sabat, OSBM
Sister Mildred Sabat, OSBM, a member of the Uniontown Province of the Sisters of St. Basil the Great for 55 years, died on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005, at Mount Macrina Manor. Sister Mildred was born in Yonkers, N.Y., on Feb 1, 1921, the daughter of the late John and Paraskeva (Patricia Bobrunka) Sabat.
She entered the Sisters of St. Basil the Great from St. Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church in Yonkers, N.Y., on Sept. 15, 1950. She pronounced her First Vows on Nov. 27, 1952, and made her Final Profession on Jan. 1, 1956, in the presence of the late Very Rev. George Bonchonsky.
During her life in the community, Sister Mildred served in many of the parishes of the Metropolia in the education apostolate, with her talents devoted especially to kindergarten through second grade. She also served at Mt. Macrina Manor as an aide in the Physical Therapy department for several years. Following this assignment, Sister Mildred did secretary work at St. John’s Byzantine Catholic School in Hazleton, Pa. Upon her return to the monastery, Sister volunteered at the Manor and helped in various capacities at the monastery until she took up residence at Mount Macrina Manor due to her declining health.
Sister Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Peter; her sisters, Anne McLean, Marion Euler and Helen Benson. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will be received at the Monastery Chapel today from 3:30 to 9 p.m. The Parastas Service will be sung today at 7 p.m., with the Rev. Kevin E. Marks, Chaplain, officiating. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 12, at 9 a.m., with Metropolitan Archbishop Basil Schott officiating.
