ADOPT-A-BLOCK PARTY: World Christian Outreach along with St. Rita Roman Catholic Church, St. John Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, United Baptist Church, Payne African Methodist Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church of Connellsville USA and Calvary Assembly of God of Connellsville and local businesses and organizations are sponsoring an “Adopt-a-Block’ party on Saturday, Aug. 20, from noon until 4 p.m. at First Street and Meason Avenue, Connellsville.

This is the second Adopt-a-Block party held in Connellsville this year. The block parties are held to help meet the social, mental, economic and spiritual needs of the people of Connellsville.

There will be organizations present to give out literature and answer questions, including Adelphai Village, Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers of Fayette Inc., Head Start of Fayette County, Children and Youth Services, Fayette County Community Action Agency Inc., Area Agency on Aging, The Stern Center, Fayette E.M.S., Crime Victims Center, Rendu Services and Alternatives Yes Pregnancy Support Center as well as a representative from the Pennsylvania State Police.

There will be clowns, balloons, face painting, games and a moonwalk for children. There will be mime teams from Mount Olivet and Mount Sinai Churches for an afternoon of praise and worship. There will be free food and drink.

Officials said, “The Adopt-a-Block parties are being held for the benefit of Connellsville’s residents. It is our hope that you will come out in support of our efforts and take advantage of all the good things that will be offered at the block party. Together, we can make a difference in the City of Connellsville.’

Donations will go towards the rebuilding program. Crusade for Jesus was damaged by fire on March 13, 2004, and is in a rebuilding process. Although the new building is not completed, the church will be in the new structure Saturday.

Lesher has begun a new sermon series entitled “An Autobiography of God As Revealed By Jesus in the Parables.’ The sermon series seeks to reveal the basic DNA of God’s nature and illustrate how he works through lives. This Sunday’s message is “Far Away, Yet at Home (The Parable of the Elder Son).’ In addition, the church will offer praise choruses, hymns and a time to express testimonies and prayer concerns. Pre-school and junior church activities will be available for children. The church is handicapped accessible and air conditioned.

JERSEY CHURCH, located on Jersey Hollow Road between Ursina and Confluence, announces services will be held on Sunday at 7 p.m. Mountain Sounds of Somerset County will sing. This is the first established church in the Turkeyfoot area (1775). A historical landmark, the first church meetings were held at the home of Moses Hall. The first church building was a two-story log building with a porch, built in 1788. It was also used as a schoolhouse. The second building was built in 1838. Fire destroyed this structure. The third and present church was built in 1877. The church is open once a year so people can appreciate the religion of the early years. Many of the members are buried in the lower cemetery.

PAYNE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH in Connellsville will host its Harvest Fellowship this Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday at 6 p.m., Connellsville native Gary Walker will appear in concert. Walker is the son of Kathleen Walker and the late John Walker. He is a recording artist with his latest release entitled “Storybook,’ which was released in Southeast Asia. He has performed in a variety of music genre, and has sung with Ray Charles, Ringo Starr and Christina Aquilera. The United Baptist Choir will accompany him. A love offering is requested at the door. TOURS PLANNED: Monsignor Edward McCullough, pastor of St. Aloysius Church in Dunbar, will be spiritual director on a “pilgrimage of thanksgiving’ to the Shrine of Our Lady at Lourdes, France, on Sept. 11-21. The tour will include visits to the shrine of the Miraculous Medal in Paris, Notre Dame, Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the tomb of St. Therese at Lisieux and other historical and religious sites.

A trip to Rome has been scheduled for Oct. 2-10, giving participants an opportunity to be present at an audience with newly elected Pope Benedict XVI. The tour will include visits to the catacombs, coliseum, major basilicas, Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel.
