Board to decide on vacant positions

By Jenny Susa 2 min read

BROWNSVILLE – Members of The Brownsville Area School District’s Board of Directors said Monday that at Thursday’s regular meeting they will be making some decisions about filling vacant positions in the district. One vacancy the board discussed was the librarian position at Cardale Elementary.

While faculty from the school said they believed that a full time librarian was necessary because the librarian helps the students learn essential skills for ongoing learning, Director Sandra Chan said that although she felt the position was important, not filling the vacancy would save the district money.

“The elementary population has declined and this would be an opportunity to save money,” said Chan. “We are in a crunch and I think we need to start doing that. Ideally there should be a librarian in every building but if we can’t do that maybe we can fill the position with aids already on staff.”

Superintendent Larry Golembiewski also told the board that if they can’t afford to hire a full time assistant principal at the high school, he would like to consider creating a dean of students position to assist the principal.

Board President Rocky Brashear said that he felt it was necessary to have someone there to assist the principal because with a new building that does hold a lot of students, the principal “can’t be everywhere.”

Other issues to be voted on at Thursday’s meeting include renewing a contract with Nutrition Inc., the district’s supplier for the cafeterias, awarding contracts for building a courtyard and tennis courts at the high school and middle school building, accepting employee resignations, and approving change orders for building projects in the district.

Golembiewski also said that he wants to introduce a new policy concerning drug testing and medical examinations for substitutes and new job applicants in the district.
