Laurel teachers union approves new contract
Members of the Laurel Highlands School District’s teachers union voted by a large margin to approve a new three-year contract with the district. The Laurel Highlands Education Association voted 158-15Wednesday night to ratify the new contract, which takes effect Aug. 25.
Gerald Pegg, LHEA president, said the agreement was a fair deal for both sides.
“Our goal was to provide a fair contract for the Laurel Highlands professional staff and do so without interrupting the educational process for our students,” he said. “We accomplished this tonight, though it was a long, involved process.”
The school board approved the terms of the three-year agreement during a meeting Tuesday night. Details about the pact will be announced Thursday.
“Negotiations were hard, but our goals were protected and our members were represented well,” Pegg said. “The team knew that we had the support of the LHEA members, and we appreciate that.”
The contract expires the first day of the 2008-09 school year, or Sept. 1, 2008, whichever comes first.
