Randle El to speak at community center fund-raiser
The East End United Community Center will hold its annual building campaign fund-raiser on Sunday at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort & Spa. The event will be held in the Marquis Ballroom with a cash bar at 6 p.m., and dinner at 7 p.m. Antwaan Randle El, a wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be the guest speaker for the dinner.
A two-sport letterman in both basketball and football in his junior and senior years at Thornton High School in Riverdale, Ill., Randle El was a first-team all-state selection. He was the Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year in 1996.
He went on to star in football, basketball and baseball at Indiana University. In 2001, he was named All-American and All-Big Ten Conference first-team as an all-purpose back. In 2002, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers as a wide receiver, where he has displayed his elusiveness and versatility.
Randle El has blossomed into a dynamic multi-purpose performer and is able to open up and adjust to the football, while possessing exceptional hands. During a game against New England in 2002, he returned the longest kickoff return in Steeler history, running for 99 yards. He’s looking to break into the Steelers’ starting lineup this year with Plaxico Burress gone.
Randle El holds a degree in sports communications and broadcast from IU and still resides in Illinois.
