Club sets golf event for funds

In an effort to help raise money for community service, the Binnstown-Low Hill Lions Club will hold its 10th annual golf scramble Sept. 25 at Springdale Golf Club. President Cliff Lacey said each year about 130 golfers take part in the scramble, and the event “sells out way in advance.”

The scramble has a 30-team maximum, and a team of four golfers can play for $240, but since most of that fee goes to the golf course, the Lions Club raises money through sponsorship, he said.

“What we do is sell advertisements,” Lacey said.

“These advertisements will be on display on the day of the outing.”

Lacey said the price for players includes food and beverages, and there will be cash prizes for the top three teams, and hole-in-one prizes for par-3s.

“The money raised during this event goes to help the blind or visually impaired,” said Lacey.

“We usually get six or seven thousand dollars from this that we donate to buy glasses for people who need them. The majority of the money raised goes to local organizations, but some is sent to third-world countries where they need it to operate on children to improve their vision.”

Lacey said the Lions Club also has a seeing-eye-dog program that benefits from the money raised at the golf outing.

“If someone needs a seeing-eye dog, they can get it through us,” said Lacey, adding that the organization has been able to place six seeing-eye dogs with owners who needed them in the last few years.

“These dogs cost about $32,000 since they are so much more than an average dog,” said Lacey.

He said that the Lions Club conducts fund-raisers throughout the year that help support various community programs. To name a few, Lacey said, the club gives two scholarships to students at Bethlehem-Center High School each year. It also supports the Brownsville Soup Kitchen, Center in the Woods, Bethlehem-Center Food Pantry and several American Legion posts.

He said the organization also is starting a Leo Club in California.

“We have 33 members and we are very active in our club,” said Lacey. “All of the money raised goes to a very worthy cause.”
