Viola Elizabeth Davenport Martin
Viola Elizabeth Davenport Martin, 92, of Hopwood, Pa., went home to be with the Lord, December 7, 2005, in the Uniontown Hospital with her loving family by her side. She was born January 18, 1913, in Fairchance, Pa., the daughter of the late Robert and Emma Davenport. And was the granddaughter of the late Rev. P.H. Thompson.
Viola was a life long member of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Uniontown, Pa. where she served as past President of the Deaconess Board and also served as Director of the Youth Choir for many years. She loved her church and her Pastor, Rev. Vincent Winfrey Sr.
A retired nurse by profession, Viola was founder and organizer of the Miss Black County Beauty Pageant.
She was predeceased by her husband, Deacon James H. Martin, two brothers, Theodore (Bru) Davenport and Charles (Oakee) Davenport, four sisters, Emma Davenport Winbush, Dorothy Davenport Hunt, Shirley Davenport Bradley, Alice Davenport, one granddaughter, Stacey Thomas, and a sister-in-law, Odessa Davenport.
Left to cherish her memory are five children: Theodore H. (Binky) Martin and wife, Virginia of Uniontown, Emma F. Martin and fianc?e Michael Jones of Hopwood, John (Stitch) Martin of Hopwood, James Martin and wife, Harriett of Tacoma, Washington and Viola M. Martin of Pittsburgh; one brother, Calvin Davenport and wife, Nella of Cleveland, Ohio, and three sisters: Mildred Thomas of Uniontown, Edna White of Buffalo, N.Y. and Marcella King of Uniontown; along with 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Evelyn Davenport of Canton, Ohio; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received in the MOUNT OLIVET BAPTIST CHURCH, 51 Stewart Avenue, Uniontown, Pa., on Monday, December 12, 2005, from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday, December 13, 2005, until 1 p.m. the hour of service with the Rev. Vincent L. Winfrey Sr., officiating assisted by Dr. Tommy Hunt (nephew of Viola) from Providence Baptist Church, Mansfield, Ohio.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the MURIEL E. LANTZ FUNERAL HOME, Uniontown, Pa.
Interment will be in Park Place Cemetery, Uniontown, Pa.
