State police probe bank robbery

By Steve Ferris 2 min read

MARKELYSBURG – State police are looking for the man who robbed the First National Bank on Route 40 at gunpoint and fled in a stolen black or dark-colored Nissan pickup truck on Monday. The suspect, who had a hood on his head and a mask over his face, was brandishing a rifle when he entered the bank, jumped on to the counter and demanded money at 11:20 a.m., police said.

“He came in and jumped up on the countertop,” Trooper James Pierce said. “He said he wanted the … money.”

He fled with almost $5,000, Pierce said.

In addition to two tellers and several other employees, there was one customer in the bank at the time of the hold up, but no one was hurt, he said.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance photos to help identify the suspect.

Witnesses described the suspect as white, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and thinly built. He was wearing faded blue jeans with an emblem on one of his back pockets.

Pierce said the suspect had a black duffle bag, into which he placed the bank’s money.

The truck, bearing Pennsylvania registration YRK-0937, did not have a tailgate, but had a chain across the tailgate opening, he said. It was stolen from the Connellsville area.

The FBI is assisting in the investigation.
