Tournament set Geibel Catholic High School will host the annual seventh and eighth grade forensics speech tournament Friday at 9 a.m.

The competition is open to any student in seventh and eighth grade attending a participating school. The purpose of the tournament is to provide an opportunity for middle school age students to learn and practice the skills of public speaking.

The student’s speeches will be judged in two categories, either humorous or dramatic. Students will be evaluated on their preparation, poise, effectiveness, posture, and five other judging criteria.

The tournament winners will be presented with either first, second or third place positions during an award ceremony beginning at 11:30 a.m. Following the award ceremony, the students will be treated to lunch and a dance.

The forensic tournament is the first event in a new initiative called The Geibel Catholic Middle School Enrichment Program. This program was formulated with cooperation of all of the local catholic school principals, the Geibel Catholic administration and the Office of Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Greensburg.

Volunteers sought

The Girl Scouts Trillium Council, which serves adult volunteers and girls in nine counties, including Fayette, Greene, Washington and portions of Somerset and Westmoreland, is in need of volunteers to assist troops throughout the area.

A variety of short-term and long-term positions are available, and hours can be flexible to meet an individual’s schedule. Some current opportunities include finance, training, and management volunteers.

“Girl Scouting gives girls the opportunity to participate in new experiences while making friends and having fun. The memories made through Girl Scouting activities often become some of the most cherished moments in a girl’s life,” said Deb Alley, director of membership for the Trillium Council. “An adequate amount of volunteers is crucial to the success of our programs. By volunteering through Girl Scouts, you are helping countless girls become successful adults.”

Girl Scouts of the USA, is the world’s pre-eminent organization for girls, with a membership of more than 3.6 million girls and adults.
