Coordinator taylors assignments to volunteers interests
As coordinator of volunteers at Friendship Hill National Historic Site in Springhill Township, Kitty Seifert tries to tailor their assignments to the volunteers’ interests. “I want them to get as much as they can from this experience,’ said Seifert. “My goal is that they come out of this having a good experience so they’ll tell others and get them to volunteer.’
Volunteers are needed for a variety of jobs at Friendship Hill: meeting and greeting visitors, giving tours, helping with maintenance and keeping the hiking trails clean.
When Joni Liston Miller approached Seifert about a volunteer internship at Friendship Hill, Seifert was able to put Miller’s interests in oral history and genealogy to good use.
Miller has undertaken an oral history project to trace Friendship Hill from its origins to the present.
“This is one of those projects that always sat on the shelf, waiting for the right person,” Seifert said.
The park service will also work with volunteers who need to meet requirements for classes, as well as high school students who need to perform community service to graduate.
