The Reverend John Roland Hickson
The Rev. John Roland Hickson, age 89, of Addison, Pa., went to be with our Lord on Friday, February 11, 2005, from Henry Clay Villa, Markleysburg, Pa., after a long illness. He was born February 5, 1916, in Easton, Maryland, a son of Charles B. and Laura Agnes Hickson.
Rev. Hickson served 43 years in the ministry. He retired from the Peninsula Delaware Conference of the United Methodist Church, Dover District, White’s Chapel Charge, Lewes, Delaware, in 1981.
Previously, he was a member of the Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church, Connellsville District and served the Addison Charge for 17 years.
He completed studies at Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C., and was ordained an Elder in the United Methodist Church.
After retiring to Addison, he served various churches in the area including Mill Run, Maryland, Listonburg and Silbaugh until 1991.
His ministry began in 1933 with the Church of God, where he served for many years in several states and local churches.
He was a Charter Member of the Markleysburg Volunteer Fire Department and Past President of the Confluence Lions Club. He was a former member of the Board of the Childrens Aid Society of Somerset County, the Mountain Team Ministry and Yough Housing Inc. of Confluence, Pa.
He was employed by United States Steel’s Clairton Works, American General Life Insurance Company, Nemacolin Mines and various other companies during his early career.
His parents, first wife, Blanche Keller Hickson, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Mildred “Patty” Wilburn Hickson; a son, Jay Hickson and his wife Diana, Atlanta, Georgia; daughters: Bonnie Wilson and her husband Terry, Dallas, Texas, Eileen Mehnert and her husband Bob, Friendswood, Texas, and Joan Jefferson and her husband David, Broadkill Beach, Delaware; sister, Catherine Schwaninger, Trappe, Maryland; 11 Grandchildren; 10 Great Grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Friends will be received at the HUMBERT FUNERAL HOME, Logan Place, Confluence, Pa., on Monday from 2 to 9 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, February 15, at 11 a.m. in ADDISON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH with the Rev. Timothy Rogers officiating.
Interment will follow in Somerset County Memorial Park.
