Gas leak forces school evacuation

By The 1 min read

GEORGES TWP. – For the second time in less than a month, students at the Fayette County Area Vocational-Technical School had to be evacuated from the building after a gas leak was found late in the afternoon Wednesday. Director John Fibbi said the leak was “very small,” and could have been caused by a vehicle parked outside an air system at the school.

Students were dismissed up to 20 minutes earlier than normal, said Fibbi.

As of 3:30 p.m., Fibbi said, crews from Columbia Gas were still in the building trying to determine the source of the leak.

The school dismissed students early on Jan. 25, after a noxious gas leaked into the building around 1 p.m. that day.

At that time, technicians tried to figure out what caused the suspected leak in the 40-year-old building.
