Scholarship offered

The Washington County Historical Society is offering a $500 scholarship to a county high school senior who has been accepted to college.

The Dorothea and Henry Hood Memorial Scholarship is based on a 500 to 700-word essay on a significant person or event in Washington County history. Application forms are available at high school guidance offices or through the Washington County Historical Society at 724-225-6740, or by e-mailing a request to info@wchspa.org.

All scholarship essays must be postmarked no later than April 30, 2005.

The scholarship is named after Dorothea Hood and her late husband, Henry Hood, who was a great-grandson of Dr. Francis Julius LeMoyne and grandson of Ann LeMoyne Harding, Dr. LeMoyne’s second child.

Mrs. Hood was a long-time historical society board member and volunteer. The annual scholarship is made possible by a donation by Mrs. Hood to the historical society.

Dr. LeMoyne was a 19th century physician, humanitarian, and educator who turned his home on East Maiden Street into a stop on the Underground Railroad, providing a safe refuge for runaway slaves heading for safety in Canada. The 193-year-old LeMoyne House has been designated as Pennsylvania’s first National Historic Landmark of the Underground Railroad.

Performance added

Connellsville Area High School will add another performance for their production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Due to the high demand for tickets an additional matinee performance has been added on Saturday, March 5, at 2 p.m. Tickets for this performance will be available starting Thursday, at the high school ticket office.

This fifth performance is in addition to the original dates of Thursday, March 3, Friday, March 4, Saturday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m.

Tickets have only been on sale to the public for one week, and already the availability of seats for the Saturday evening and Sunday matinee is limited.

Since the story of Beauty and the Beast is so popular with children, the additional matinee will provide an excellent opportunity for children to see the production. Good seats are still available for the Thursday and Friday performances.

Tickets for Thursday’s performance are $8 per person; Friday, Saturday, (2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.) and Sunday are $10 per person.

Grants awarded

Fayette County and two of its communities will receive recycling grants totaling more than $369,000.

The county will receive $305,916 to make improvements at the Goodwill Recycling Center and enhance curbside collection of recyclables.

Georges Township will receive $49,950 to improve the township’s yard waste drop-off program, and South Union Township will receive a $13,342 grant to enhance its curbside recycling program.

“I have always favored recycling programs as a wise tool for managing our resources and protecting our environment,” state Sen. Richard A. Kasunic said in announcing the grants. “I will continue to seek state funds to supplement local efforts.”
