State Theatre for the Arts holds play auditions
The State Theatre for the Arts in Uniontown will hold auditions for John Penzotti’s “Five Blue Haired Ladies Sitting on a Green Park Bench” beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the theater. Interested actors should contact the theater to schedule an audition.
The play first premiered in the United Kingdom three years ago and it is being presented at the State Theatre in April for the first time anywhere in the United States.
“Five Blue Haired Ladies…” first came to the stage of the Harold Clurman Theatre in New York City as a 12-minute, one-act play. Later, encouraged by accolades of the play, Penzotti developed the characters in full. In the play’s current form, it found its way to Theater Royal Lincoln for the world premier and two tours in the United Kingdom.
“Many thanks to the State Theatre for breathing new life into ‘the ladies’ and giving them their American debut,” said Penzotti.
The play is a light-hearted comedy about five ladies who met regularly on a park bench in New York and talk about their lives and observations.
The play’s characters include:
Eva Reisch – A matron from the upper eastside of Manhattan.
Gladys Feinberg – Gladys is strong willed, a bit of a loud mouth and crass at times.
Anna Cinzano – Anna is a sweet and frail Italian lady who dresses in all black.
Rose O’Connor – Taller and a more handsome of a woman than the rest.
LaLa Carmichael – A buxom full-figured woman, LaLa is a bit larger than life.
Shirley – Shirley has a smaller frame than Rose and a few years younger than the other girls.
Marvin – Gladys’ husband and very much like her – outspoken and loud.
Nunzio – Nunzio is Anna’s gentle husband.
Richard – Eva’s husband – like her, very upper crust.
Tuffy – A handsome lad in his 20s, he is LaLa’s brother.
The play will premiere on April 15 at the State Theatre.
