EAST HUNTINGDON TWP. – Two 21-year-old Fayette County men were killed late Tuesday night when their car hit a tractor-trailer on Route 819 just outside Scottdale, sheering off the car’s roof when it went under the trailer. The Westmoreland County coroner’s office identified the driver as David A. Greenawalt Jr. of Main Street, Vanderbilt, and his passenger as Adam L. Giles of North Sixth Street, Connellsville.

State police said the truck driver, Joseph L. Bush, 56, of Braddock Road, Mount Pleasant, was not hurt.

Greenawalt and Giles were traveling south about a quarter-mile north of Scottdale around 11:20 p.m. and Bush pulled out of a parking lot or from the berm of the road and was heading north, police said.

The car hit the trailer, went underneath it, continued south for about 1,200 feet and then hit a tree, police said.

Greenawalt and Giles were pronounced dead at the scene just after midnight.

Autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death were planned for Wednesday, and toxicology test results are due in two to six weeks, according to the coroner’s office.

A coroner’s report said Greenawalt was not wearing a seatbelt, but an airbag deployed.

The report does not say if Giles was wearing a seatbelt or if an air bag deployed where he was sitting.

Funeral arrangements David A. Greenawalt are being handled by the Frank Kapr Funeral home in Scottdale.
