Local teen in contest for state homecoming queen
A Brownsville High School senior has a chance to be the winner of the next America’s Homecoming Queen competition. Cay-Lan Nguyen of Republic is Brownsville’s homecoming queen and has been selected as a finalist for Pennsylvania’s 25th Annual Homecoming Queen Selection to be held on April 16 and 17 at the Lancaster Host Resort in Lancaster.
The contest is only an option for homecoming queens who can only participate if they are invited.
Nguyen said she was required to send a “resume” of her activities and interests.
She was able to submit a long list of organizations in which she is involved, including student council, the YEA Club, Interact Club, French National Honor Society Club, S.A.D.D. and the National Honor Society.
She is also senior class vice president and a varsity cheerleader.
Outside of school, the Brownsville Rotary Club selected Nguyen as the January student of the month, and she takes dancing at Koza and Company Dance Studio.
She said she will likely go to college for chemistry or forensics.
Nguyen said at the state competition, she will have to answer interview questions, and the interviews will largely determine the winner of the contest.
“The questions will probably be about what I do and what I think about current events,” said Nguyen.
“I think this will be a good opportunity and an interesting experience.”
Pennsylvania’s 2005 Homecoming Queen will receive a cash scholarship and an expense paid trip to the National Finals to compete with winners of other state competitions for the title of America’s Homecoming Queen.
Nguyen said the location for the national finals has not yet been released to her.
