Connellsville man dies in auto accident
A 22-year-old Connellsville man died after his car wrecked into a cinder block wall in South Connellsville early Sunday. Jason E. “Pudge” Schroyer died after a one-vehicle accident in the 1500 Block of Hyndman Street at 12:18 a.m.
When South Connellsville police officer Erik Hertzog arrived on scene 20 minutes after midnight, Schroyer was unresponsive and trapped in the passenger’s side seat of his 2003 Ford hatchback.
The accident occurred as Schroyer’s vehicle attempted to round a sharp bend, but instead hit the curb and wrecked into a cinder block wall, Hertzog said.
Hertzog said the car’s two rear tires were stamped in the grass and mud. The passenger side of the vehicle was heavily damaged, but the driver’s side had less of an impact, he said.
According to Fayette County 911, shortly after the accident, Schroyer’s vehicle was blocking the roadway and leaking gas and Schroyer was said to be unconscious. Schroyer was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident, Hertzog noted.
Fayette EMS arrived about five seconds after police arrival and transported Schroyer to Highlands Hospital’s emergency room. His heart stopped sometime in between the transport and the hospital, and it was up to Hertzog, his first time at handling a fatal accident, to notify the family of the tragedy.
Both parents, Scott W. Schroyer and Deanne J. Kerns Schroyer of Connellsville, arrived at the hospital only to hear that their son had died.
The South Connellsville and Connellsville fire departments also responded to the scene.
On Sunday night, the Schroyer family declined comment.
