Robbery probe continues

By Steve Ferris 1 min read

State police and the FBI said they are continuing to investigate last Tuesday’s armed robbery at Smithfield State Bank in Smithfield and they would like to talk to anybody with information about the holdup. The FBI is offering a reward for information in the case, in addition to the $1,000 reward Fayette County Crime Stoppers is offering.

Rick McGlennon, an agent in the FBI’s Charleroi office, said the amount of any reward will be commensurate with the value of the information.

McGlennon said investigators received positive information from an anonymous source and would like that person to call again.

“The investigation is progressing,” state police trooper George Mrosko said Monday.

He said two masked men entered the bank on Main Street just before 2 p.m. Jan. 11 and one brandished a handgun.

They went behind the counter to the safe and teller’s drawers before escaping in a waiting car with an undisclosed amount of money.

A number of employees and customers were in the bank, but no one was injured.

Mrosko can be reached at 724-439-7111, the FBI at 724-483-3122 and Crime Stoppers at 724-437-TIPS.
