Lowell W. Whitlow Sr.
Lowell Wayne Whitlow Sr., 72, of Vestaburg, Pa., died Monday, Jan 24, 2005, in the VA Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa. He was born Feb. 6, 1932, in Brownsville, Pa., the son of Andrew S. and Margaret Dupree Whitlow.
He was raised and attended school in Brownsville. He retired from the U.S. Navy, serving in the U.S. Military for 20 years, the first four years in the Army and for 16 years in the Navy. He was a Korean War Veteran. While serving his country, he received the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal with three Battle Stars, Navy Europe Occupation Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Infantry Badge and Occupation of Japan Medal.
Following his armed services career, he worked for 11 years at the Vesta Five Coal Mine and its LaBelle Coal Processing plant for J & L Steel. After it closed, he was a driver for the Veterans Administration in Pittsburgh, with 16 years of service. He was a member of UMWA Local 772 of Vestaburg, Hanson Cole American Legion Post 391 of Fredericktown, Elks and Eagles Clubs, both of Brownsville, TREA Retired Enlisted Men’s Club and VFW of Carmichaels.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Barbara Jean Samarin Whitlow; a daughter, Margaret Whitlow (Chris) Toth of Clarksville; a son, Lowell W. (Desiree) Whitlow Jr., of Vestaburg; four granddaughters, Jessica and Felicia Toth and Dannika and Bryanna Whitlow; two grandsons, Josh Toth and Lowell Whitlow III; a brother, William S. Whitlow of Florida; a sister, Shirley Whitlow Wilson of Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Robert Jennings and Calvin and Kenneth Whitlow; and two sisters, Dolores Yancich and Louella Shiota.
Friends will be received in the FRANK BURKUS FUNERAL HOME, 26 Mill St., Millsboro, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held in the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at 11 a.m., with Deacon Tom Raymond officiating. Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill. Graveside services will be conducted by Hanson-Cole Legion Post, In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to any Veterans Organization, St. Michaels Church of Fredericktown, or the Fredericktown Library.
