Students honored
Local students were among the 312 named to the dean’s list at Thiel College for the spring 2005 semester.
A student must attain a grade point average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale while being enrolled full-time to be eligible for the dean’s list.
Named to the list were Marc W. Berry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary W. Layton of McClellandtown; Casey M. Mitchell, daughter of Veronica E. Kuchar of Perryopolis; Zachery T. Goodwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas I. Goodwin of Sycamore; Parke Bongiorno, son of Mr. and Mrs. Parke T. Bongiorno Sr. of California; Eric L. Hauser, son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas E. Monahan achieves honor
Jillian Monahan, a Uniontown resident, was named to the Wheeling Jesuit University dean’s list for the spring 2005 semester.
College recognizes Witt
Timothy Witt of Connellsville was named to the dean’s list at Grove City College for the spring 2005 semester.
Witt is a 2003 graduate of Connellsville Area Senior High School and the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Barry Witt of Connellsville.
Webster on dean’s list
Byron Thomas Webster of Uniontown was named to the dean’s list at Wake Forest University for the spring 2005 semester.
Students who achieved a 3.0 or higher grade point average were named to the list.
Whyel on honor roll
James Allen Whyel Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. James Whyel of Markleysburg, was named to the honor roll at Mercersburg Academy for the spring 2005 term.
Jackson selected
A Uniontown student has been selected for Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s McNair Scholars Program.
April Jackson of Uniontown, daughter of Tina Jackson, is a 2002 graduate of Uniontown Area High School. She is a member of IUP’s Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, and is an English major at IUP.
IUP is one of only 170 college and universities in the nation to receive funding and host a McNair program. The program promotes entry into graduate school for first-generation, low-income and minority students through mentoring and other special educational opportunities.
The McNair program serves 20 students each year by providing academic support services as well as the opportunity to conduct original research and earn a stipend of $2,800.
Jackson is currently participating in a six-week residential summer research experience where students will develop proposals under the direction of a faculty mentor. Students will have the opportunity to present their work at local symposiums as well as national McNair research conferences.
First awarded by the U.S. Department of Education in 2003, the IUP McNair Scholars Program is directed by Dr. Calvin Masilela, IUP associate professor of geography and regional planning.
The IUP McNair Scholars Program, known federally as the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, is named in honor of Dr. Ronald E. McNair, who served as the mission specialist aboard the flight of the 1986 shuttle Challenger disaster.
The McNair program is part of TRIO, an educational opportunity for low-income and disabled Americans.
Eddy graduates
A local resident graduated from Dickinson College during a recent commencement ceremony.
John William Eddy, son of John Eddy of Pittsburgh and Nancy Vernon of Uniontown, graduated cum laude and received a bachelor’s degree in history.
A graduate of Laurel Highlands High School, Eddy was also named to the College’s 2004-05 dean’s list.
George named honoree
Elizabeth A. George, daughter of Elias and Beverly George of Uniontown, was named to the dean’s list at Ohio Northern University for the spring 2005 semester.
The list includes students who attain a grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 grading system.
Wiltrout receives award
Elizabeth Wiltrout of Uniontown was recently awarded the Joseph F. Mulach and Louisa A. Mulach Scholarship by the Pittsburgh Foundation.
She is one of three recipients of this scholarship.
Wiltrout, daughter of Howard and Mary Wiltrout of Uniontown, is a junior chemistry major at Carnegie Mellon University. She hopes to earn her doctorate degree in chemistry and pursue a career in academia and research in the field of chemistry.
In addition to her course load and research efforts, Wiltrout is involved in several campus organizations, including the Chemistry Student Advisory Council and the Women in Science organization. She has also participated in various campus outreach programs relating to chemistry.
Students accepted
A number of local girls have been accepted to attend the fifteenth annual Space Experience at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus this summer.
Attending the Space Shuttle Simulator experience from July 18-22 are Natoshia Phillips from Friendship Hill Elementary in the Albert Gallatin Area School District, Jenna Lindsay from Bullskin Township Elementary, Silvia Exton from Connellsville Township Elementary, Elizabeth Henry and Katlyn Pritts from Dunbar Township Elementary, Megan Grimm from Clifford N. Pritts Elementary, Kayla Shaffer, Kelsey Conn and Nicole Walskey from South Side Elementary, and Erinn Enany from Zachariah Connell Elementary, all from the Connellsville Area School District.
Attending the Mission to Mars experience from July 25 – 27 are Sarah Elliot from Smithfield (Albert Gallatin), Samantha Slavik from Perry Elementary in the Frazier School District, Alexis Hughes, Julianna Buckel, Gabrielle Sikora, Natalie Szewczyk from St. Mary School, Sadie Caccimelio and Peyton McIntyre from St. John the Evangelist School. Attending from the Connellsville Area School District are Jenna Lindsay and Mercedes McKeel from Bullskin Township Elementary, Samantha Striner from Connellsville Township Elementary, Kaylee Eans and Sue Stazetski from Dunbar Borough Elementary, Katlyn Pritts from Dunbar Township Elementary, Brooke Grimm from C.N. Pritts Elementary, Nicole Walskey from South Side Elementary.
The programs are funded by a grant from NASA through the Pennsylvania Space Grant consortium to make girls aware of career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The Space Shuttle Simulator focuses on the current technology that is used to get into space, while the Mission to Mars has a greater emphasis on science and exploration of new fields. Both programs end the week with a simulation.
In the first program, crews of seven are loaded into the shuttle simulator for launch. In the second program, each crewmember has specific tasks to accomplish.
