American Cancer Society to host annual conference for cancer survivors

3 min read

The American Cancer Society’s 17th Annual Cancer Survivors Conference will be held on Sunday, July 24, at The Great Hall at Heinz Field. The conference is designed to help cancer survivors, their families, friends and caregivers, to deal with cancer, including those who are newly diagnosed, in treatment or already treated.

Cancer survivors, whether one day since a diagnosis or three decades, never need to face cancer alone. Survivors can find support from other people with cancer, as well as from medical professionals such as nurses, social workers and other caregivers, who will be on hand at the conference to share vital information concerning cancer.

The conference is organized by American Cancer Society volunteers who understand the importance of learning and sharing information in non-technical, easy to understand language. It is designed to provide medical information and support, not medical advice.

The conference agenda is as follows:

10 to 11 a.m., registration.

11 to 11:15 a.m., welcome and introductions.

11:15 a.m. to noon, Dr. Joel Nelson, Prostate Cancer Overview.

Noon to 12:45 p.m., break.

12:45 to 1:30 p.m., Dr. Steve Karlovits, The Importance of Family and Community in the Lives of People with Cancer.

1:30 to 1:45 p.m., break.

1:45 to 2:30 p.m., Dr. Adam Brufsky, New Research Directions in Breast Cancer.

2:30 to 3:30 p.m., conference wrap-up and door prizes.

In addition to the conference activities, participants are encouraged to visit and tour The Great Hall at Heinz Field, to view various Pittsburgh Steelers memorabilia, including Super Bowl trophies and various historical football displays.

The deadline for registration for the 17th Annual Cancer Survivors Conference is Thursday. The conference is free for cancer survivors, and $5 for caregivers, family and friends, and includes parking, lunch and a T-shirt. A parking voucher will be necessary for free parking and is only available through pre-registration. Participants who do not pre-register may still attend, however, the cost for parking will be $10. All parking will be available in Pre-Sold Lot 1.

As an added bonus for attending the Cancer Survivors Conference, all participants will be entitled to a ticket to attend the Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game, on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 1:35 p.m. at PNC Park. Tickets will once again be free for cancer survivors, and $6 for all other guests. Tickets are limited to the first 400 requests. Tickets can be picked up at the conference, or at the Will Call Window at PNC Park prior to the game on Aug. 7.

The Cancer Survivors Conference is sponsored by UPMC Cancer Centers; Eckerd Foundation; St. Margaret Memorial Hospital Foundation; Helen Forde Gander and Mary A. Baldwin Charitable Trust; Mercy Cancer Institute; Western Pennsylvania Cancer Institute; Forbes Regional Hospital; Aramark; and Coldstone Creamery in Cranberry.
