Carmichaels gets grant for new building
Carmichaels received a $30,000 grant to help pay for a new borough building to be constructed in a borough-owned lot across from the First Federal bank. State Rep. H. William DeWeese (D-Waynesburg) and state Sen. J. Barry Stout (D-Bentleyville) recently awarded the grant to the borough through the state Department of Community and Economic Development, borough secretary Mary Lewis said.
Lewis said the grant along with borough savings of $15,342 will help pay for a modular office space. Lewis said the borough is hoping to receive additional funds to pay for the new building.
The borough council determined that the money they spend renting their current office space, which is shared with the borough police, could be used to make loan payments that may be required to purchase the new building.
New Council President Chris Bates, who began his council duties Tuesday, said a committee formed for the project will meet soon to work out the details of the purchase.
“We are renting now. It would be more cost efficient and logical to have a new building,” said Bates, a three-year resident of the community.
Additional information is expected at the next borough council meeting, which is scheduled for Aug. 9.
