Jack Eugene Cook, age 67, of 627 Pala Avenue, Fairbank, Pa., passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2005, in Brownsville General Hospital, Brownsville, Pa. He was born May 12, 1938, in Donora, Pa., son of George W. Cook and Mary Ann Smith Cook. Jack was raised in Donora, Pa., and lived in the Redstone Township area for 44 years.

Jack attended California University of Pennsylvania in California, Pa., where he received several certifications in criminal justice.

He retired from the Redstone Township Police Department where he served as Chief of Police for 25 years. Jack was the first black Police Chief in Western Pennsylvania. He was the recipient of “The Achievement Award” in 1976 from The Order of The Eastern Star 11th District (O.E.S-P.H.A.).

Jack was a veteran of the United States Army where he served with the Screaming Eagles (Paratroopers).

He was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of I.B.P.O.E. of W. Dunlap Lodge No. 214, Brownsville, where he served as Western Advisory to the State President, a member of Steel City Council No. 8 and also served as State Security and Grand Security.

He was also a member of Fraternal Order of Police LaFayette Lodge No. 55.

He was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church.

He loved his family, adored his grandchildren! He also enjoyed watching sports and westerns on television.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Herman Cook and Joe Louis Cook, and four sisters, Anita Cook, Dorothy Coles, Ruth Stamper and Mary Jane Lawson.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 44 years, Marilyn J. Washington Cook; two daughters: Jacqueline E. Cook-Young of Uniontown, Pa., and Sarah Jane Patterson of Fairbank, Pa.; a son, Voneric Cook and his companion, Robin Smith, of Uniontown, Pa.; eight brothers: George Cook (Virginia) and Robert Cook (Leola) both of Pittsburgh, Pa., Andrew Lee Cook (Mary) of Cleveland, Ohio, Robert Fears (Eve) of Terre Haute, Indiana, Sherman Fears and Elton Cook both of Donora, Pa., Hosie Cook of Monongahela, Pa., and William Cook of Hammon, Indiana; six sisters: Ruby Crawley (Donald) of Monessen, Pa., Diana Whitner and Julia Mae Fears both of Waukegan, Illinois, Sheila Cook, Christine Hickman and Melonie Cook all of Donora, Pa.; five grandchildren: Douglas Patterson, Zachary Patterson, Blake Cook, Donavan Cook and Briayna Cook; a special niece, Valarie Lawson Griffey (George Ken Griffey Sr.); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Friends may visit with the family today (Monday, July 18) from 6 to 9 p.m. at FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, Sixth Street and Allen Avenue, Donora, Pa.

The B.P.O. Elks will conduct a service there beginning at 7:30 p.m.

A second visitation will be held at MOUNT LEBANON BAPTIST CHURCH, Baltimore Street, Brownsville, Pa., on Tuesday, July 19, from 4 to 8 p.m.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, July 20, in MOUNT LEBANON BAPTIST CHURCH at 11 a.m. conducted by Dr. Herman B. Jackson.
