Authority wants a Main Street manager
The Downtown Uniontown Business District Authority (DBDA) will ask the city council for permission to apply for a state grant that would provide at least partial funding to hire a Main Street manager to promote the downtown area and apply for other grants. DBDA board members unanimously approved the matter Tuesday after Uniontown Redevelopment Authority Director Mark Yauger outlined the program.
The state would provide grants totaling $175,000 over five years through the Main Street Program to hire the manager, but local matching funds are required.
Yauger said the match does not necessarily have to be cash.
He explained that grants for business fa?ade improvements, a revolving loan fund for businesses and planning are also available through the program.
In an unrelated business item, Judy Vrabel, acting director, said that 48 artists have already signed up for the annual Arts in the City event, which is scheduled for Sept. 11 downtown.
She said three local churches will set up food booths, and other vendors also will participate.
A tent is needed to shade Eberly Square, where a band will perform, she said.
Vrabel also said only six weeks are left in the Storey Square Summer Lunch Series, which is being held on the Central School lawn along Church Street due to construction in Storey Square.
Sponsors are needed for a few of the remaining dates.
The board also conducted interviews with three prospective board members to fill an unexpired term.
Board members also agreed to recommend Richard L. Hostetler Jr. to city council for approval to fill the seat.
The board also voted to change its meeting date to one hour before each monthly city council meeting.
The council meets the first Wednesday of the month at 12:30 p.m.
