District applying for grant

By Patty Yauger 3 min read

CONNELLSVILLE – The district will again make application for federal funding to support its vocational-technical and business programs. Connellsville Area School District board members approved the submission of the Carl D. Perkins grant paperwork Thursday that will net $158,534 if approved.

“It really helps our vocational-technical program,” said Eugene Cunningham, district business manager.

Last year, said Cunningham, a similar amount was awarded to the North Fayette Vocational-Technical School. The funding was used to purchase equipment for the carpentry, auto mechanic and bakery/pastry programs and included a table saw, commercial cookie machine, auto analyzer and four-post engine hoist, along with training videos and computer software.

“It allows the district to purchase equipment being used by companies, restaurants and factories and train the students to use it,” said Cunningham.

The funding has also defrayed costs associated with a lumber-grading course held at the vo-tech school and salary and benefits for other personnel.

Cunningham said the district has restructured how it will utilize the 2005-06 allocation that will allow additional equipment to be purchased for the various programs taught at the vo-tech, along with the business-related classes at the high school level.

The change came about, he said, after administrators determined to eliminate a special population coordinator position that was subsidized through the Perkins program.

“We’ll be able to put more of the money toward equipment purchases,” said Cunningham.

The funding will also be used, he added, for the hiring of aides at the vo-tech.
