Official: PNC job cuts to have no effect on local offices

By Steve Ostrosky 2 min read

Local customers who use PNC Bank should see no impact on service, despite the company’s recent announcement that it will reduce its work force by nearly 3,000. As part of the “One PNC” initiative, PNC plans to eliminate nearly 3,000 positions, with most of the job losses realized through attrition and elimination of open positions.

Brian E. Goerke, PNC communications manager, said most of the layoffs are “headquarters oriented,” referring to the company’s downtown Pittsburgh location.

He said the local effect “should really be none.”

“For the branches and customer facing personnel, there really won’t be an impact,” he said.

Goerke said 7,700 people are employed in PNC’s Pittsburgh region, which includes local branches in Uniontown, Connellsville, Belle Vernon, California and Mount Pleasant.

According to a company release, PNC expects to save approximately $300 million in costs and achieve at least $100 million in revenue growth.

“I am confident that PNC will emerge from this process a much stronger, much more efficient and unified organization,” James E. Rohr, chairman and CEO, said in a statement. “While the One PNC initiative required many difficult decisions, it was necessary that we take dramatic steps to reduce expenses and enhance our revenue growth opportunities. We believe these steps will create powerful operating leverage for PNC and help us provide better customer service.”

The initiative will continue to be implemented over the next two years, according to PNC.
