Mall hosts NIE book sale

By Steve Ostrosky 2 min read

While it wasn’t quite the equivalent of the recent release of the sixth Harry Potter book, book lovers took advantage of a unique book sale at the Uniontown Mall Tuesday. The first Herald-Standard Newspapers in Education book sale was held throughout the day to raise money for the NIE program, which provides newspapers to local schools. Teachers use the newspaper in a variety of ways as part of their class work during the school year.

Jo Lieb, NIE supervisor, said the books were donated at a drop-off event last week and sold at reduced prices at tables set up outside Value City department store.

“We’ve had a nice crowd since we started at 9:30 a.m.,” she said. “Everyone who has come by has asked why we’re here and what the program is about.”

Books of all varieties were available, as people stopped to peruse or purchase. Lieb said the book sale exceeded the amount she hoped to take in for the entire day by early afternoon.

“Uniontown Mall has been very supportive,” she said. “They have given us a great location in a heavy traffic area.”

Lieb, involved with NIE for seven year, said the book sale will likely become an annual event as a way to raise money and awareness for the program.

“What better way to beat the heat and help get people reading?” she said.
