North Union community forming watch program
After noticing an increase in crime in their North Union Township neighborhood, Tracy Anderson and her neighbors have decided to take action by forming a neighborhood watch program. Anderson, who lives on Forbes Street, said in recent months, her neighbors have been the victims of home invasion, burglary and vandalism.
She said someone attempted to rob her while she was on her porch.
“If something like that could happen to me, it could happen to anyone in this neighborhood,” Anderson said. “I moved my kids here to give them the same kind of life I had, but now kids are afraid to be out after dark.”
She said the community watch group was formed to learn more about the neighborhood and to look out for each other.
Saturday, a community day will be held to support the program, which extends through 11 streets in the township. The event begins at 1 p.m. with a parade and continues throughout the afternoon.
After the parade, Fayette County Commissioners Angela Zimmerlink and Vincent A. Vicites are expected to speak, along with Magisterial District Judge Deberah Kula, whose office is located in the crime watch area.
Anderson said the day will be held for community members to get to know each other, but will also be educational for any members of the public who wish to attend.
Trooper Brian Burden, public relations officer, will speak at 2:15 p.m. to those in attendance about “stranger danger” and child identification kits will be available at the event.
Anderson said she is hopeful for a good turnout Saturday to strengthen the community and combat the increasing crime rate.
“We hope to see a lot of people, whether they are from the immediate area or just want to come and show their support,” she said.
The community watch group includes the following streets: Bouquet Street, Braddock Street, Forbes Street, Murphy Street, Coolspring Street, Connellsville Street, Areford Street, Wagner Street, Spalding Street, Cycle Avenue and Reppert Boulevard.
Bouquet Street will be closed for much of Saturday for the event, which includes a silent auction, a raffle, food and refreshments and games for children. For more information, call Anderson at 724-439-3947.
