Mapletown High School to hold commencement exercises Thursday
Mapletown High School will hold commencement exercises for the Class of 2005 Thursday at 7 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. Remarks will be made by Dr. Philip Savini Jr., superintendent, and Janet Pennington, senior class sponsor. Richard L. Hauger, high school principal, will present the class.
The graduation speaker will be state Rep. H. William DeWeese.
Lorraine Adams will deliver the valedictorian’s address entitled, “Where Did the Time Go?” She is the daughter of Ralph and Minda Adams of Headlee Heights.
Adams has been a member of the marching and concert bands for six years. For the past three years, she has been drum major of the band and was flute section leader for two years. She has also been active the chorus for five years.
Adams’ other school activities include the National Honor Society, in which she currently serves as president, SADD and the Academic League.
She is a member of the Mapletown United Methodist Church, where she plans youth activities and is the substitute Sunday school pianist. She has been a member of the Greene Valley Presbyterian Youth Group for four years.
In addition, she has been a reporter for Flipside, the Observer-Reporter’s youth page, for two years, and was the student editor. She is also a freelance writer for the Greene County Messenger.
This fall, Adams plans to attend Waynesburg College, where she received the A.B. Miller Scholarship and Department of Communication scholarship. She will major in communication and has plans to become a newspaper reporter after college.
Dale Born will deliver the salutatorian’s address entitled, “Education: A Never-ending Journey.” He is the son of Robert and Joy Born of Mapletown. Grandparents are Miller and Dora Barb of Mapletown and Robert and Rosalie Born of Reedsville, W.Va.
Born is a member of the National Honor Society and its peer tutoring program, Youth Education Association and its Read Across America program, Academic League, PennServe, and Coro Leadership Council.
In addition, he is a member of the varsity football team and weightlifting.
He was chosen as the May Student of the Month by the Carmichaels Lions Club and was 2004 Class Marshal. He was awarded the Academic Achievement Award for two years and the Varsity Club Scholarship, Who’s Who for four consecutive years, and the National Society of High School Scholars.
Born was the Waynesburg Rotary Club World Affairs Seminar representative, received the SAT 1100+ Award, and was a six-year Academic League member.
He has held the position of class president and vice president, and was a member of the junior and senior class standing committees. He has maintained perfect attendance for three years.
Born is a member of the Mapletown United Methodist Church, where he is a member of the youth group and served as president. He is a bible school volunteer and has served as the church acolyte for eight years. He has taken part in many community service projects, including fundraising dinners and beautification work in the local cemetery.
He will attend West Virginia University this fall and major in aerospace engineering. He has received a Blue and Gold Scholarship and a WVU Enhanced Academic Grant.
Charles B. Loring II, president of the Class of 2005, will deliver the welcoming address. He is the son of Charles and Pam Loring of Greensboro.
He is a member of the National Honor Society, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Youth Education Association, Interact Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Academic League and the varsity football team.
Loring attends the Mapletown United Methodist Church and participates in the Sheetz Family Christmas. He received the U.S. Army Reserve Scholar/Athlete Award, the Salvation Army Scholarship and the DAR Good Citizenship Award.
He will attend Seton Hill University this fall and will major in chemistry. He received an academic scholarship and a football scholarship.
