Police issue report Eleven people were killed and 324 others were injured in 786 traffic crashes state police investigated during the four-day Memorial Day weekend, Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller said.

He said three of the fatal accidents and 95 of the crashes were alcohol related.

State police arrested 351 people for driving under the influence, an increase of almost 24 percent from the 284 arrested for DUI last Memorial Day weekend.

“Far too many people are being or injured because of drunk drivers,” Miller said. “You should never get behind the wheel when you’ve been drinking, even if you intend to drive only a short distance.”

Miller said eight of the 11 people killed were not wearing seat belts.

Troopers issued 6,450 speeding citations and 565 seat belt violation citations.

During last year’s holiday weekend, 14 people were killed and 336 were injured in the 773 crashes to which state police responded.

Lunch series to begin

The Uniontown Downtown Business District Authority is kicking off the Storey Square Summer Lunch Series on Friday with the High Ryder band performing from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The series, which runs every Friday through Aug. 26, has been moved from Storey Square to the lawn at Central School on Church Street, due to the demolition of the Murphy building and future construction.

This Friday’s featured restaurant is Boston Beanery. Lunch is available for a fee, and people can bring their own food. The event will be moved to the State Theatre Center for the Arts in the event of rain.

Program offered

The Frazier School District will hold its summer food service program beginning Monday, June 13, through Friday, Aug. 19, at the high school cafeteria. Breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The site will be closed on July 4-5.

All children are eligible to eat free, regardless of income. The cost for adults is $1.50 for breakfast and $2.25 for lunch. All meals must be consumed in the cafeteria.

For more information, call Suzanne E. Boni, cafeteria coordinator, at 724-736-1115.

Reunion planned

A reunion for the former St. Joseph School in Uniontown will take place at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Walnut Hill Road, Uniontown, on Sunday, July 3, with Mass at 11 a.m. and a backyard social with classmates, food and drink.

There are no records for the school, so the reunion committee is asking for classmates to contact them to receive an invitation. In addition, some records that were recently submitted were lost. Anyone who has not received an invitation should call Bernardine Yespak at 724-439-1249 or the church office at 724-437-3927.
