Greene officials hear recreation plans

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

WAYNESBURG – The Greene County Commissioners heard from county Parks and Recreation Director Jake Blaker Thursday regarding the summer programs across the region, including the re-opening of the pool at Monview Park. Blaker told the commission during a brief regular meeting that the pool, which was taken over by the county a few months ago, will be opened throughout the summer and added that the county is working to re-open an old roller-skating rink at the park.

“We are up in full swing at the park and we are hoping to get some money from the state to help refurbish the roller rink,” Commission Chairwoman Pam Snyder said.

Blaker added that the pool was opened on Memorial Day and noted that 128 families have already reserved pavilions throughout the summer at the park.

The pool is just one part of a massive, county-wide campaign to overhaul the area recreation with courses being offered in many fields including wedding survival dance courses, massage therapy classes, CPR training and others, with all being offered at the Greene County Fairgrounds.

According to Mackin Engineering, who was hired by the county to help conduct public surveys and assess the condition of the county’s recreation system, 2000 census statistics showed a countywide population of 40,672, with more than 69 percent of those residents in rural areas and a growth rate of about 3.2 percent over the last 40 years.

County officials said residents who returned the surveys focused on creating additional recreational programs for all age groups across the county, including the development of an ice-skating rink and other sports fields and also found that nearly half of the residents polled said they travel more than 15 miles for recreational purposes.
