Lemont Furnace man dies while working at Heinz Field

A local man who was working at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh died Tuesday afternoon when he fell four stories while painting a stairwell, according to the coroner’s report. Russell William Costolo, 45, of Lemont Furnace was pronounced dead at 3:05 p.m. at Allegheny General Hospital, after he suffered major injuries from the fall.

The Allegheny County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy performed Wednesday revealed Costolo died from blunt force trauma to the head as a result of the fall around 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the Gate C section of the stadium. The autopsy also found the trauma to be of an accidental nature.

Costolo was employed at Avalotis Painting Company out of Verona.

Avalotis could not be reached for comment late Wednesday.Costolo was born Sept. 8, 1959, in Uniontown, the son of Robert and Fay Baluch Costolo of Lemont Furnace.

He is survived by two children: Karlie Rae and Dalton Costolo, at home; a brother, Robert W. Costolo and wife Marlene of Juniper, Fla.; his paternal grandmother, June Costolo of Lemont Furnace; many aunts, uncles, cousins and a very special nephew, Curtis Wayne Costolo.

Preceding him in death is his paternal grandfather Cleland Costolo, and maternal grandparents Joseph and Alice Baluch.

Costolo was protestant by faith, was a graduate of Laurel Highlands High School, Class of 1977, and was a member of the IUAP District Council 57.

Friends will be received in the Donald R. Crawford Funeral Home, Hopwood, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday until 11 a.m., the hour of the service, with the Rev. Randy Costolo and the Rev. Roger Howard officiating.

Interment will follow in the Sylvan Heights Cemetery.
