Connellsville Area woman helps edit book

Johanna Harden, who owns and operates The Bug Trap at 238 N. Pittsburgh St., Connellsville, recently served as technical editor on a book recently published by Penguin Publishing Group, “Common Household Disasters,” for do-it-yourself homeowners.

Harden, a licensed pest control professional for more than 20 years, served as technical editor for the pest control related chapters.

“I met the co- author, Sonia Weiss, through our common hobby of vintage clothing collecting,” Harden said. I offered some advice on protecting clothing collections from textile pests, and Sonia, who was just beginning the book for homeowners dealing with common household disasters, wondered if I would be interested in serving as technical editor for the household pest’s chapters.

Harden began her career in pest control early in the 1980’s and has seen the many changes in the pest control industry. “Products now are formulated with very low application rates, and many insect pests can be eliminated using small amounts of low dosage baits,” she relates. Harden has worked with pest control professionals in several states, dealing with training and teaching. She had spoken at Cornell University extension programs, the Michigan State Department of Agriculture training seminars, and at West Virginia and Pennsylvania teaching and recertification seminars.

Harden can be reached at 724-628-6280.

Agriculture grants available

Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff has announced that applications are now available for the 2005-2006 Pennsylvania Agricultural Product Promotion Matching Grant program. The grant program provides matching funds to nonprofit agricultural product promotion or marketing organizations that devise and execute campaigns to tout Pennsylvania products, helping to increase sales.

Since 1995, the department has awarded 164 matching grants totaling more than $5.6 million, to create a cumulative investment of over $10 million in agriculture marketing. Over the last 10 years, more than $1.2 million have been awarded to increase consumer and foodservice provider demand for Pennsylvania mushrooms, while $625,350 has been granted to boost milk consumption in Pennsylvania schools.

Applications for the program are evaluated on a number of factors including:

– Project relevance to the promotion or marketing of Pennsylvania agricultural products;

– Scope of the project;

– Potential impact upon the sales of agriculture commodities; and

– Number of organizations involved in the proposal.

Interested groups must submit their applications to the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Market Development by July 8 at 4 p.m. The application, work plan and budget should reflect Jan. 1, 2006, as the project start date and Dec. 31, 2006, as the completion date.

The department also has its own marketing efforts including the Pennsylvania Preferred program, which helps consumers identify products produced and processed in Pennsylvania, and the “Simply Delicious…Simply Nutritious’ campaign that encourages consumption of fresh Pennsylvania fruits and vegetables.

For more information, or to obtain a grant application, contact Kyle Nagurny at 717-787-6041, or visit www.agriculture.state.pa.us, and click on ‘funding opportunities.’
